A Tale Of Mixed Signals

Today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. I work downtown where there are Parades and events scheduled. From my office on the Third Floor, I have a Bird's Eye view of the Parades as they continue along their route. I'm not normally one for these sorts of things for any reason; it has nothing to do with it being MLK Day or anything of that nature. I happen to consider him to be a great man who has had a huge impact on the world. I'm just not a Parade kinda guy.

That said, it's no problem to just peer out the window to have a look-see. As I glance down at the processions moving past, I was struck by something that just seemed to say "Do those people even remember what MLK stood for and what he died trying to achieve?". There were a myriad of floats being pulled by vehicles and the people on these floats were tossing out candy and beads and trinkets to the crowds on either side of the street. Maybe I'm just being cynical but that doesn't exactly strike me as relevant to what Dr. King was doing. Candy? Beads? Is this a celebration/appreciation of one of the great advocates for the advancement of Civil Rights in the United States (and the World) or is this a Mardi Gras Parade? From where I was, it looked like the latter. It just struck me as entirely inappropriate.

From what I understand, Amnesty International is sponsoring an All-You-Can-Eat luncheon at Barnhill's "Stuff Yer Piehole" Buffet in memoriam of Gandhi this summer. That'll be a hoot, won't it?

Some people really don't get it. Apparently, I don't...
